*Texas Mission of Mercy San Angelo: October 13-14, 2017*

Every day, hundreds of thousands of Texans struggle to make ends meet. Basic needs take precedence over healthcare, especially preventative care. Often left untreated, oral health issues can lead to many other health problems, such as heart disease, cancer, and other very serious health concerns. Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) is a mobile dental clinic that serves uninsured or underinsured Texans with free, pain-relieving dental care in a mission setting.   TMOM is a program of the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation (TDASF).   As the charitable arm of the Texas Dental Association, TDASF’s mission is to educate the public and profession about oral health, and improve access to care for citizens of Texas.

TDASF has hosted 65 mission events since 2001, but this will be the first time TMOM is coming to San Angelo.

Our goal for the San Angelo TMOM is to treat between 700-1,000 patients, relieving their pain and restoring them to oral health.  Roughly one hundred volunteer dentists, along with hundreds of dental and community volunteers, will come together to run this two-day clinic.  Many volunteers will come from the San Angelo area, while others will travel from all corners of the state, at their own expense, motivated by the desire to help.

There is a wide range of tasks necessary for a TMOM event and can call on expertise other than dental knowledge.  About 250 volunteers are needed on each day, Friday and Saturday, to make this event a success.  Jobs may include (but are not limited to) filling out registration paperwork with patients, moving patients from one station to the next, educating children and adults about oral health, or serving food to patients and volunteers.  There is also a great need for bilingual volunteers.  Due to the difficulties of assigning hundreds of people very far in advance, the majority of volunteer positions are assigned the day of the event, when you arrive.

Phony waiting lists take fees, the real ones NEVER do. If you or someone you know needs public housing assistance, make sure he or she knows about the Section 8 housing scams that prey on home- seekers. The scams use websites that look like registration sites for Section 8 waiting list. They take people's "registration fee" money and their personal information for their own personal use. These hopefuls usually don't know they have been scammed  until the real waiting list is closed and they haven't received any notification. There is NEVER a fee to register for a real Section 8 waiting list. If you sign up for one and it requires a payment, please call your local housing authority and make sure you have the correct website up.

Thank You!!

Due to the current workload and new team members on the HCV (Sect. 8) team, appointments are necessary in order to speak to your housing caseworker. Please call the office to schedule a time to meet with your caseworker if necessary. Walk ins WILL NOT be seen at this time.
